How Should You Care For A Scar? Discover Silicone Scar Therapy

After a wound has closed, a scar may remain. Scars often look red and swollen. This can fade, but it can also get worse. Good care is important to help your scar heal as well and quickly as possible. What is the best way to care for your scar?

Ways to Care for Your Scar

Start caring for your scar quickly after wound closure. In the first period, you have the most influence on the recovery (growth and shape) of the scar. An active scar has a red color. If the scar is no longer active, usually after 1.5 to 2 years, you can only do something about the stiffness, itching and pain.

The sooner you start taking care of it, the better the recovery and the fewer complaints. So, what helps against visible scars and scars that cause complaints? Here are some tips to take care of your scar.

  • Silicone therapy
A scar loses a lot of moisture. Using a silicone patch or silicone gel on your scar ensures that the moisture loss is greatly reduced. This reduces complaints such as itching and pain and the growth of your scar is inhibited. Silicone therapy is the most commonly used scar treatment by professionals.
  • Sun protection
Protect the scar from the sun. A scar is vulnerable and extra sensitive to burning. It can also discolour and the risk of skin cancer in this area is greater. Therefore, always use a (sun) cream or silicone gel with at least sun protection factor 30.
  • Scar cream
A good scar cream hydrates and protects the skin. By hydrating your (scar) skin, the moisture balance is restored. This is very important for the recovery of your scar. A good option is the scar cream from ALHYDRAN. This cream hydrates and gives your skin a ‘roof’: a layer that ensures that the moisture balance in the skin remains at the right level, without closing it off. ALHYDRAN provides an occlusive layer on the skin, which also brings moisture from deeper skin layers to the surface.
  • Keeping your scar clean
Always keep the skin around and on your scar clean. This is to prevent infections.

After an operation

After an operation, there is always a scar. Cosmetic operations can also cause scars. And that is not what you want. To limit scar formation, you can start silicone therapy immediately after the wound has closed.

Scars on visible places such as your face , neck or hands are best treated with a (transparent) silicone gel . On places where the skin is not protected by clothing, you can use a silicone gel with SPF40. This gel immediately protects the skin against harmful UV rays (sunlight).

For (larger) scars in less visible places, you can use silicone plasters .

After an accident

The chance of an abnormal scar after an accident is high. For example, with a deep abrasion or a dog bite, there are many bacteria present. These bacteria can cause skin infections and delayed healing of the wound. This increases the chance of a problem scar developing .

It is important to clean the wound immediately and keep it that way. Immediately after the wound has closed, you can use silicone therapy and a moisturizing scar cream.

After a burn

Burns can also cause scars . Scars from burns come in all shapes and sizes and often cause severe symptoms. Extra care for your scar is therefore important. Immediately after the burn has closed, you can use silicone therapy and a moisturizing scar cream. For optimal results, we recommend treating your scar during the day with silicone gel or a silicone plaster and at night with a moisturizing scar cream.

After a caesarean section

You may have given birth or be about to give birth by caesarean section. A caesarean section is a procedure that can cause a noticeably abnormal scar.

For a beautiful recovery of such a scar you can use the Scarban c-section silicone patch . The C-section is a pre-formed silicone patch, specially developed for scars after a caesarean section.

Doubts about your scar?

Always consult your doctor or dermatologist first if you have any doubts about scars (complaints). You can do a lot yourself in terms of care, but a doctor remains the expert in this field. Always follow the advice of your practitioner.
