Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial Fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia which is detected via an electrocardiogram (ECG). About 1 in 4 middle-aged adults will develop atrial fibrillation. It is classified into 4 varieties: paroxysmal, persistent, long-standing persistent and permanent. Treatment needs to be tailored to the individual patient in accordance with the duration, symptoms, and severity.
Risk of Atrial Fibrillation
Early detection and treatment are critical for the (unaware) patients; it reduces the risk of stroke by 68%.6
The risk of developing Atrial Fibrillation increases with age. Patients may have various symptoms (such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, weakness, chest pain, dizziness) but 50 – 87 % are initially asymptomatic (!) Atrial Fibrillation is associated with a 5x greater risk of stroke and heart failure. In 60-80% of Atrial Fibrillation cases hypertension is present.
2020 ESC Guidelines on Atrial Fibrillation
1. Lifestyle changes and weight loss in obesity are highly recommended to manage atrial fibrillation.
2. Opportunistic screening for atrial fibrillation is recommended in hypertensive patients and elderly.
3. Definite diagnosis of AF in screen-positive cases is established only after physician reviews the single-lead ECG recording of ≥30 s or 12-lead ECG and confirms that it shows AF.
